My LGBTQ+/ GSRD Practice
Who I Support
Rain or Shine is an LGBTQ+/GSRD inclusive practice. I provide therapeutic support for:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, pansexual, and asexual individuals.
Trans, non-binary, gender-diverse, intersex, genderqueer, and agender people.
Those in polyamorous, open, and ethically non-monogamous relationships.
Kinky individuals, fetishists, and BDSM practitioners.
People questioning their gender identity, sexual orientation, or relationship styles.
Importance of LGBTQ+/GSRD Inclusive Therapy
Many LGBTQ+/GSRD clients feel overlooked by previous therapists, which is why I established Rain or Shine. My experience has taught me that LGBTQ +/GSRD clients often face issues like isolation, shame, and trauma and more frequently identify as neurodivergent. This highlights the need for knowledgeable LGBTQ+/GSRD affirmative therapists.
How I Work in an LGBTQ+ Affirmative Way
I provide a non-judgmental, understanding space to explore your identity.
I have a comprehensive understanding of LGBTQ+/Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diverse identities. This is backed by advanced accreditation from Pink Therapy, a specialist GSRD diploma and prior work experience in the LGBTQ+ charity sector.
You don't need to educate me about your experiences; I am committed to learn as the need arises.
I'm experienced and skilled in working with issues which LGBTQ+ individuals often experience, such as shame, isolation, trauma, and neurodivergence.
I work with the minority stress model, recognizing the impact of societal discrimination on mental health.
What is the Minority Stress model?
This social research and public health model theorises that the increased social stresses faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, like discrimination and homophobia, make them at higher risk for negative physical and mental health outcomes.
In my practice, I recognise how social and political marginalisation can negatively impact your well-being. As a result, I place a strong emphasis on empowerment, addressing shame and negative internalised societal messages, and helping individuals feel they are worthy and can find a place they feel they belong.
How my Background Supports my LGBTQ+ Work
Prior to starting my therapy practice, for 16 years I was involved in various roles and activist projects supporting LGBTQ+ people and disabled people. Through these experiences, I’ve gained significant insight into the needs of marginalized communities, particularly in supporting trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals through my role as a trans advocate.
Having achieved advanced accreditation through Pink Therapy, and completed the Pink Therapy specialist diploma in Gender, Sexuality, and Relationship Diversity, I am well-informed on contemporary research on LGBTQ+ mental health. Alongside this, I hold a Master's in Queer Literature and Culture (distinction) which has shaped my queer and intersectional values and understanding of the world.
My Commitment to Supporting Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse People
I’ve experienced first-hand the challenges of accepting oneself, coming out and navigating the world as a trans and non-binary person. As such, I’m wholeheartedly committed to supporting trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people to individually realise their authentic selves and collectively achieve trans liberation.
My practice offers trans and non-binary clients a safer space. Here, they can process their experience with someone who ‘gets it’ in a nuanced and knowledgeable way, without asking invasive questions or expecting to be educated. At Rain or Shine, gender-diverse experiences are not only validated - but celebrated, as well.
