My LGBTQ+/ GSRD Practice

Who I Support

Rain of Shine is an LGBTQ+/ GSRD Inclusive Practice. Under this banner, I’m proud to support a large number of identities with therapeutic support:

  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, pansexual and asexual people.

  • Trans, non-binary, gender-diverse, intersex, genderqueer and agender people.

  • People in polyamorous, open and ethically non-monogamous relationships.

  • People who identify as kinky, fetishists or interested in BDSM.

  • People who are questioning their gender identity, sexual orientation or relationship styles.

Why is LGBTQ+/ GSRD Inclusive Therapy important?

Through my time as a therapist, I’ve worked with many LGBTQ+ and GSRD clients who say that they have felt ‘missed’ by previous therapists. I set up Rain or Shine to address this lack

My experience working in LGBTQ+ mental health support has also shown me how LGBTQ+/ GSRD clients are more likely to experience secondary issues, such as isolation, shame and trauma - as well as often identify as neurodiverse. This is another reason why LGBTQ+/ GSRD affirmative therapists must be informed around these issues.

How I work in an LGBTQ+ Affirmative Way: Key Points

  • I offer a non-judgmental space to explore your identity and experience.

  • I have a comprehensive understanding of LGBTQ+/ GSRD identities and practices. You don’t have to educate me about your experiences, and if there is something I don’t yet understand, I will take the time to educate myself about it.

  • I’m trained in working with additional issues that LGBTQ+/GSRD people commonly experience, such as shame, isolation and trauma.

  • I have experience working with neurodiversity.

  • I work using the minority stress model.

What is the Minority Stress model?

This social research and public health model theorises that the increased social stresses faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, like discrimination and homophobia, make them at higher risk for negative physical and mental health outcomes.

In my practice, I recognise how social and political marginalisation can negatively impact your well-being. As a result, I place a strong emphasis on empowerment and addressing negative internalised societal messages.

How my Background Supports my LGBTQ+ Work

For the past 16 years, I’ve been involved in a variety of professional roles and activist projects supporting LGBTQ+  people and communities. I have also worked in disability support. Through these projects, I’ve gained extensive experience in the emotional and practical support needs of marginalised people and communities. I’ve also developed particular expertise in supporting trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people.

I have a specialist diploma in supporting Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diverse clients accredited by Pink Therapy, as well as a Masters focusing on Queer Literature and Culture (distinction).

Now, in my current role as a therapist, my practice aids LGBTQ+ and GSRD individuals from a vast range of backgrounds in exploring issues concerning gender identity, sexual orientation or relationship styles. You can find more details on my professional background and experience here.

My Commitment to Supporting Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse People

I’ve experienced first-hand the challenges of accepting oneself, coming out and navigating the world as a trans and non-binary person. As such, I’m wholeheartedly committed to supporting trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people to individually realise their authentic selves and collectively achieve trans liberation.

My practice offers trans and non-binary clients a safer space. Here, they can process their experience with someone who ‘gets it’ in a nuanced and knowledgeable way, without asking invasive questions or expecting to be educated. At Rain or Shine, gender-diverse experiences are not only validated - but celebrated, as well.
